Bosch High-Performance IMU Sensor BMI088 Designed for Drones and Robotics

At the 2018 CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas, Bosch Sensortec launched its MEMS IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) sensor BMI088 that is specifically designed for Drones and Robotics. BMI088 IMU sensor shows outstanding vibration robustness and ultra-low noise, which are key requirements for high precision drone and robotic stability controls. Bosch Sensortec started the production of BMI088 in May 2018 and began its stocking at Mouser in November 2018.

Bosch has been a top tier sensor supplier for long time for automotive industry. The new BMI088 contains a 16-bit digital 3-axis accelerometer and a 16-bit 3-axis gyroscope that are the technological outcome of Bosch’s deep-rooted automotive expertise and combination of new conceptual design of IMUs (Inertial Measurement Units). BMI088 also offers outstanding temperature stability under large fluctuations of ambient temperature. Based on Bosch’s automotive-proven gyroscope technology, BMI088 offers unmatched drift bias stability if less than 2o/hour and a low TCO (Temperature Coefficient of Offset) below 15 mdps/K. Other features include a low TCO of 0.2mg/K and low spectral noise of only 230μg/√Hz in the widest measurement range of ± 24g. BMI088 IMU sensor not only provides high performance, but also features a small footprint of only 3 x 4.5 x 0.95 mm3 in a single LGA package.

The high performance and fast response enable the BMI to suppress disturbance caused by vibration. The acceleration range is from ±3g to ±24g and the gyroscopic slew rates is up to ±2000o/s. The high performance of BMI088 makes it an excellent candidate for many applications, such as drones and robotics.

BMI088 is a SiP (System in Package) to combine both a gyroscope and accelerometer in a single package. For optimum system integration, BMI088 digital interface supports I2C up to 400 KHz and SPI communication up to 10 MHz. With the gyroscope and accelerometer in one unit, each of them can be accessed either individually or data outputs of both can be synchronized.

To further facilitate application designs, BMI088 can be used with other Bosch sensors, such as BMI085 IMU Sensor for AR/VR applications, BMP388 Barometric Pressure Sensor, BMM150 3-axis Geomagnetic Sensor and BMI160 IMU sensor.

Bosch Sensortec BMI088 can be used with other Bosch sensor family products to implement advanced system designs
