Traditional passive components such as resistors, capacitors, inductors, solenoids, and transformers etc. are essential elements for electronic designs. Since they are critical in maintaining signal integrity, EMI mitigation, thermal dissipation and power efficiency, selecting the appropriate passive components is the key to successful design. While we understand the passive components are so important to the design, traditional passive components impose many drawbacks, such as large sizes, low efficiency, cost and packages, etc. As new technologies begin to be used in passive component design and manufacturing, some new passive components are emerging and attracting design engineers’ attention. To help design engineers select the new passive components for the new power efficient and reliable designs, we introduce some new passive components from Vishay.
T58 vPolyTanTM SMT Tantalum Capacitors
Vishay T58 series vPolyTan Solid Tantalum Chip Capacitors combine polymer tantalum technology with the Vishay high efficiency MicroTan® packaging technology. They offer very low ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) for a wide range of capacitance. The T58 series capacitors boast the industry leading capacitance-voltage ratings in eight molded case codes, including 47 µF/6.3v in the compact M0 (1608-10) case and 220 µF/10V and 330 µF/6.3V in the BB (3528-20). The Vishay T58 series capacitors offer a 10% improvement in PCB space utilization compared to similar components that have not incorporated the patented MAP (Multi-Array-Packaging) assembly technology. Therefore, the T58 series capacitors are excellent for space sensitive applications, such as smartphones, tablets, ultra-thin laptops. Wireless cards, network equipment and audio amplifiers, etc.
WSHP2818 10W current sensing resistor
Vishay Surface Mount WSHP2818 resistors use the Power Metal Strip® technology to offer high power up to 10 W and low resistance down to 0.001 Ω. The WSHP2818 features improved thermal management incorporated into the designs. The resistor shows low inductance that is less than 5 nH and low thermal EMF that is less than 3 µV/°C. The sulfur resistance by construction is unaffected by high sulfur environments. The material of the resistive element is either solid nickel-chrome or manganese-copper alloy with low TCR that is less than 20 ppm/°C to provide high precision and is ideal for all types of current sensing, voltage division and pulse applications.
IHLE high current electric field shield inductor
Vishay IHLE high current inductors offer high current capability and the built-in e-field shield is 20 dB reduction at 1 cm. The IHLE inductors is capable of withstanding high current transients without being saturated. The temperature rating is up to 155°C and it is AEC-Q200 qualified for automotive applications. The IHLE inductors can find applications of engine and transmission control units, Diesel injection drivers, DC/DC converters, noise suppression for motors of windshield wipers/power seats/power mirrors/heating & ventilation blower/HID lighting and LED drivers.
SMD MGDT series Miniaturized Gate Drive Planar Transformers
A gate drive transformer is required in a Switch Mode Power Supply (SMPS) to control the timing of switch operations. The gate drive transformer is fundamentally pulse transformers to drive the gates of MOSFET or IGBTs. They are also used for voltage isolation and impedance matching. The applications require the gate drive transformers have excellent rise time, droop and overshoot characteristics. Vishay MGDT series Miniaturized Gate Drive Transformers are ideal for delivering MOSFET/IGNT gate power and timing signals simultaneously. Compared to traditional bobbin and toroidal winding technology, the Vishay MGDT gate transformers save more than 40% PCB space and have a 33% lower profile. They are capable of directly driving high side MOSFETs/IGBTs on busses up to 1200V with excellent rise time, overshoot, and peak current characteristics. The MGDT gate transformers feature an 8 mm minimum creepage and clearance from the drive to the gates, which ensures the device can withstand high transient voltages. The operational temperature range is from -55 °C to 125 °C.
230 EDLC-HV ENYCAP 3V energy storage capacitor
Vishay 230 EDLC-HV ENYCAPTM capacitors are electrical double layer polarized capacitors that are suitable for high density energy storage applications. Their operating voltage is rated at 3 V and it supports rapid charge and discharge. The useful life span of the 230 EDLC-HV ENYCAPTM capacitors is up to 2000 hours at 85°C. The 230 EDLC-HV ENYCAP is ideal for many applications including power backup, burst power support, storage device for energy harvesting, micro UPS power source, smart metering and energy recovery, etc.
High power 2.5W precision thin film resistor
Vishay Precision High-Power (PHP) series chip resistors are designed for high power applications that use surface-mount resistors, which utilize the traditional aluminum oxide substrate and large backside conductor for better thermal conduction of heat to the board traces via contacts. The increased backside termination also reduces the thermal resistance between the topside resistor body and the solder joint in the circuit board. Four case sizes of PHP series high-power chip resistors are available. Case sizes 0603 and 0805 offer high power ratings of 0.375 W and 0.675 W respectively. Higher power ratings are available with case sizes 1206 and 2512 at 1.0 W and 2.5 W, respectively. The Vishay PHP series thin film resistors offer more than double the power ratings traditional thin film chip resistors in the same case sizes. The PHP series high power chip resistors can be excellent selection for many applications, such as power supplies, power switching, braking system, test/measurement equipment and motor deflection circuits, etc.
